Beauty Lessons from My Mother

Fun fact: My mom was once confused for one of my classmates at a graduation event when I was a senior in high school. In fact, she's regularly questioned on whether she is actually mine and my sister's mother. The remarks about how young she looks (and well, really is) never seem to end. This past weekend was Mother's Day, so it seemed fitting to interview the first person I really learned about beauty from:

Face

"I use the five step Saranghae Korean skincare system. I like it because I have sensitive skin and it doesn't bother that and it's very light and not heavy. With that, I mask once a week with the charcoal mask that they include. I picked it out because it had all five steps included, wasn't expensive, and had good reviews. I like the Perfecting Treatment and the Eye Concentrate from La Mer too, but I don't want to use them all of the time since they're expensive. I mainly use those as my night routine and use the Saranghae stuff in the morning. I have to make sure I have sunscreen on when I go out, I have Lupus and it's affected by the sun. I like the Glossier sunscreen because it's so light."

"The only makeup I wear is the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer and Dior eyeliner. I don't like a lot of makeup - I like the natural look - plus I'm lazy and work from home. If I go out maybe I'll put on mascara. I also use the Smith's lip balm, the Tropical Ambrosia one is my favorite flavor."

Body

"I use the L'Occitane Concentre de Lait for my body lotion every day. I like that it's light and makes my skin soft and smells heavenly. I've been using Dove soap bars in the shower my entire life because it doesn't irritate my skin. Once in a while if I need a tannish look in the Spring or Summertime I'll use the Jergens Natural Glow lotion. I like to get a pedicure every other week to keep my feet soft and well-maintained, since I wear flip flops every day being that I live in California."

Hair

"I use Ovation because I have very fine hair and the products help to thicken it and start new growth. It works really well for me, I've got lots of baby hairs. I wash and blow dry my hair every day because it gets greasy and I like the feeling of clean hair. When I blow dry it I use the Kerastase Crème de la Crème as a styling cream. I get highlights in my hair every couple of months, but I like to keep it low maintenance."

Overall

"Go for light, refreshing, and natural - it makes you feel good and it's not overdone! Embrace your differences. People are always trying to look like someone else, but what's cool and interesting about people is what makes them different."
